Overview

This project explores how colour and material properties can evoke positive emotional responses by transitioning from ephemeral light to tangible, interactive surfaces. Through a CMF (Colour, Material, Finish) design lens, it seeks to enhance wellbeing and foster sensory storytelling.

Inspired by Barbara Erwine’s notion of sensory space—where light, touch, and cultural context converge—the project aims to create moments of sensory crescendo that emotionally resonate with users. Visits to immersive, sensory-rich spaces—such as the Axel Vervoordt Gallery and James Turrell’s installations—inspired me to explore how light and colour transitions could be transformed into physical, interactive forms for emotional reflection and release.

Objective

To develop a Colour & Material Selection Library—a system that helps designers and users communicate emotional intent through material choices, encouraging meaningful engagement with surface, colour, and texture.
